[Symbol Discussion] - Waves

The symbol we're discussing in this thread is Waves

Waves are very symbolic dream symbols that suggest some sort of emotional disturbance unfolding in their lives. Its connection with the wind, sun and moon suggests that this force belongs to the unconscious side of the dreamer; a pull towards the shore (consciousness) a symbol relating to a turbulent energy emerging.

Waves can appear relating to unpredictable outside forces, shifts in moods (moon/feminine) or relationships. If this is something that you can see from a safe distance it tends to reflect proper grounding relating to this particular event. However if you are in the water it shows that you will be engulfed or struggle to keep afloat.

I think a daily word (that should require experience and deep thought to be meaningful) should be more like a weekly or even monthly word, and that for students of dreaming who are open/honest with the desire to share and grow in their awareness, this could be a neat stimulus. But like so many things, it could also be overdone/distracting, and it is my personal experience that dreams don't like being put in "tidy" boxes/categories (or grossly broad assumptions); when doing this the dreamer tries to "close the case" and decide what it means rather than keeping an open mind that could yield further, layered insights. The best dreams are simply too complex to fit in tiny boxes (which are probably reflective of tiny minds).

Think of it this way (from my understanding): to get the most from your dreams, you must go *deep* more than wide, so any exercise geared toward the butterfly always flitting to the next bright flower without any thought for the last one will probably be more inhibiting than helpful. At least something to consider.

As someone who used to body/board surf and wanted to pro surf (before I saw the movie Jaws), waves have different meanings to me than those who have only seen them in movies or from afar or from a boat. How could their dreams of waves have the same *language* as my dream of waves? The lack of contextual understanding in "dictionaries" like this should always be considered. Been a long time since I had waves/water dreams, but then I was sometimes under them, hidden from the waves and yet feeling them, as a fish might, or riding them, freeing myself from them as I crawl onto the beach, as a newly made land-being might have felt.

Hi @PaulKH , Thank you for your feedback on this format. I hear what you're saying about the frequency of the threads.

This symbol discussion format was one idea I had to invite the folks who are searching for advice about a particular symbol into our community, and give us fresh discussion content on a daily or weekly basis. Consider these threads living threads, one of which can be expanded on over time, not a 1 day post and then closed for further discussion.

I think nuance and depth might be accomplished by having a long-term discussion about certain symbols, but perhaps the post format needs some refinement, or to be tossed altogether. I will continue to mull it over. If you have any additional thoughts on this, please reach out to me via DM .

Maybe the format can be adjusted to prioritize personal context over the symbol itself. I modified the questions a little bit to reflect this.

Waves...the ocean...in Jungs words: a symbol of the unconscious..
There is a beautiful Grimms Fairytale....
The fisherman and his wife....
He catches a big fish and the fish promises great wealth when he spares his life.
Now the wife of the fisherman is extremely greedy and sends her husband back to the fish, asking for more and more...
Every time when he goes back to the ocean, the waves !!!
Are getting higher and higher, wild and destructive....
I try to copy the story...
